Subscription Management
Changing Subscriptions
Customers typically go through subscription lifecycles of either upgrades or downgrades, or simple changes. Changes to plans can be done immediately or scheduled for a future date. They can also be prorated immediately or on the next invoice. You can also reset the billing anchor, which implies that going forward, the subscription cadence is set from the change date.
Subscriptions can be changed in two ways:
Start Change Contract - a new contract will be created for signing, subscription will start upon contract execution and "Change Date" set. This is best when you want to have written consent that the subscription will change.
Change Subscription - the subscription will change immediately or be scheduled if changed for the future ("Change Time").
How To: Change a Subscription with Written Consent (Start Change Contract)
When changing a subscription, you have the following options:
Change Time - when the subscription change will occur:
Immediate
End of the period
At renewal
Custom Date
Reset Billing Anchor - Resetting the billing anchor changes the start date of the subscription’s billing cycle, effectively aligning future invoices with the new anchor date.
Yes - next invoice will be generated on the selected "Change Time", useful for when upgrading a subscription to a new plan.
Example:
The contract started on September 15, with monthly billing originally scheduled for October 15.
The plan includes a fixed pricing of $3,000/month.
We reset the billing anchor to November 1 (Change Time) so that the next invoice and all subsequent invoices will be issued on the 1st of each month.
No - Invoicing will continue to the follow the same schedule.
Proration
Do not prorate any charges - the system will not calculate a partial charge or credit for a mid-cycle change.
Charge proration amount in the next invoice - Any pricing changes from the subscription update are applied in full on the next scheduled invoice, while the current invoice remains unchanged.
Charge proration amount immediately - The system calculates the difference between the old and new pricing immediately, and this delta is reflected as an adjustment on the next invoice.
If the nominal price increases, the system will charge the customer immediately for any additional amount owed for the remainder of the current period.
If the nominal price decreases, the system will issue a credit immediately or apply it to the next invoice
Note: For changes that also modify billing frequency (e.g., annual → monthly), the actual amount on the next invoice may be higher or lower depending on how much was already paid for the original term.
Proration Example:
Original Subscription: $100/month
Upgrade: $150/month on day 15
Billing cycle: 1st-30th
Proration Option | Mid-cycle Adjustment | Invoice(s) | Next Invoice |
Do not prorate | None | No new invoice | $150 (full new month) |
Prorate on next invoice | Deferred ($25 for half-month) | No new invoice | $150 + $25 = $175 |
Prorate immediately | Calculated immediately ($25 for half-month) | New invoice generated for $25 | $150 (full month) |
Term - any updates to the subscription term.
Pricing - any pricing updates to the changed subscription.
Pausing Subscriptions
Payments for subscriptions can be paused with invoicing in draft or void mode. The subscription lifecycle continues as usual (for example, future subscription cancellation).
How To: Pause a Subscription
Cancelling Subscriptions
Plans can be cancelled with the options to end immediately, at the end of the billing period, at renewal or at a custom date. Cancellations can be issued with refunds (last payment or prorated).

Trial Subscriptions
Subscriptions can be offered in trial mode, allowing users to experience your product before committing to a purchase. With Maple, you can automatically enroll customers into a plan at the end of the trial, with or without a credit card, and track trial conversion metrics to gain insights into your funnel.
